Want to Play Some Footie?

Soccer can be a really fun sport. Soccer can also be a really funny sport too. Have you ever watched a game on television and heard the announcers use words and phrases that sound a little strange to you? Trust me, they’re not doing this to try and mix you up. It’s just that soccer has its own special language - at least to people from England - where the game was invented over one hundred years ago.

For starters, the English people call the game football, not soccer, because you use your foot to kick the ball so much of the time. That seems to make sense. We have football over too but in that game you use your hands more than you use your feet. That seems confusing.

In soccer, I mean football, a team is called a side. So, in football, one side plays another side in a game. Actually in football, a game is actually called a match.

So in Canada we would say:
My team is playing her team in a soccer game.
In England they would say:
My side is playing her side in a football match.
(I always thought a match was what you used to light a fire. I think I’m getting even more confused now.)

Over here, soccer is played on a field.
In England, a field is called a pitch.
(over here a pitch is for baseball, isn’t it?)
So we would say:
My side is playing her side in a football match on the pitch.

In Canada, a player has a uniform and wears shoes on his feet.
In England, a player has a kit and wears boots on his feet.
So we can now say:
My side is playing her side in a football match on the pitch in our new kit and boots.
(I’m not so sure it’s safe to play soccer, I mean football in boots, unless the field, I mean pitch, is really wet.)

I hope you’re getting all of this. The only thing I’m getting is a headache.
